Meta Open Arts, New York, NY (2019)
In 2019, I was an artist in residence with Facebook through their Meta Open Arts Program (formerly Facebook AIR). I was invited by Meta to create a large-scale paper sculpture for their New York Office.
Concept:
In a time of unprecedented technological innovation, our daily lives are increasingly intertwined and interdependent. This has broadened our concept of neighbor, and also blurred geographical and cultural boundaries. In response to this reality, I have created a new landscape that investigates relationships between geographical places while also building a dialogue between color and material.
In addition to exploring boundaries, the work pulls from the long-held quilting tradition of reusing discarded fabric remnants to create something new. I am intrigued by the idea that materials, such as fabric and paper maps, inherently retain traces of their original purpose. This concept that materials hold memory served as a navigational principle for the project.
